Dame Barbara Shenfield
The funeral service of Dame Barbara Shenfield, who died aged 85 on 17th June, was held today. Dame Barbara served as a Trustee of the Social Affairs Unit for many years, still taking an active part in our meetings as recently as this February. She combined a robust commitment to free market ideas with a deep, practical concern for the less fortunate. Dame Barbara had a successful academic career in sociology at a time when far fewer women were in academia. Later she became Chairman of the WRVS, who were the providers of meals on wheels for the elderly. As her obituary in the Daily Telegraph, and her obituary in The Independent both note, in her time Dame Barbara stood as a Liberal Party parliamentary candidate, helped set up the University of Buckingham, served as Vice-President of the Mont Pelerin Society, was Chairman of the forerunner of Age Concern and was Chairman of the Friends of the Imperial War Museum.
Update - July 5th: Dame Barbara has received an obituary in The Times.
Update - July 23rd: Dame Barbara has also received an obituary in The Guardian.
