Time to stand up to Russia

Posted by Watlington

Today's Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com) contains a passionate article by President Saakashvili of Georgia. He urges the free world to stand up to Russian bullying of his country and condemn Russia for their flagrant breach of human rights. In a few years Georgia has been transformed from being a gangster state into one which abides by the rule of law and supports the free market and open society. Yet, President Putin - whose autocracy grows greater by the day - is harassing Georgia and bullying Georgian citizens in Russia. As President Saakashvili states:

the age of imperial overlords and of the cold war is past.
All the signs are that Russia is reverting back to its authoritarian ways. Shadow Defence Secretary Liam Fox has had the courage to condemn Russian behaviour. It is something that the Tory foreign affairs team need to confront head on.
