Restaurant Review: N16
Review 6: N16
16 Byres Road, Glasgow G11 5JY (0141 576 1505)
This really is an enchanting place. Just walking into this remarkable restaurant is a wonderful experience. I arrived at N16, escaping the hustle and bustle of Glasgow - and the rain - not knowing what to expect. Open the door and you immediately arrive in a haven of tranquillity. Although the restaurant itself is quite small, the aesthetics are carefully thought out.
Across one of the walls is a beautiful trunk of wood with branches curling round. The walls are white paint on brick and the chairs a delicate green to match in with the surroundings.
Within five minutes, one felt an immense sense of calm and pleasure, and this was without any food having been ordered. Of course, Watlington's cheery spirits were also boosted by the fact that my dining companion was also enchanting, having invited me to Glasgow for the day to see this wonderful City in all its glory.
The food itself did not disappoint. As with everything in this restaurant, there is incredible attention to detail. My starters of hot salmon was so beautifully presented - and was a generous portion, so unlike the nouvelle cuisine of London fare. Also ordering poached salmon for the main course, the fish literally melted in the mouth. Watlington's companion ordered chicken. This wasn't any kind of chicken. Full of flavour, it came with a fabulous aroma.
No desserts as we were both so full, but perfect coffee, a feeling of contentment and no desire to leave. All through the meal, the service was exceptional - not too "in your face". As if by magic the waiters appeared at exactly the right moments. The billl was incredibly good value - not cheap - but no rip off and befitting the standards of food and service. If you crave tranquillity, beauty and good food, then go to N16. It simply adds to the pleasure of visiting Glasgow.
