Stuff the CBI
It is good news that David Cameron chose to cancel his CBI speech this morning, instead going to visit the British Troops in Iraq. He is so right not to kow-tow to the CBI, a pointless lobby group that tries to bully, bluff and bluster to get its way.
The CBI really is an organisation that has long had its day. It represents corporatism at its very worst.
Having spent years toadying up to Gordon Brown, it can now see which way the wind is blowing and is desperate to have the Tory Party leader on board. Whilst small businesses are busy fighting for their lives against excessive regulation and taxation (and have no time to attend silly conferences), the CBI struts around the corridors of Whitehall and Westminster making shoddy deals with decision makers and ensuring that the cosy cartels of the multinationals continue. Just as Nick Ridley wanted to get rid of the Department and Trade and Industry, so it is time to wrap up the CBI. They should have long gone with the militant trade unions during the Thatcher years.
Mr Cameron should tell the CBI that their glory days are over and that under a Conservative Government there will be no champagne and canapés at Number 10.
