No replacement for Patrick Mercer - yet

Posted by Watlington

David Cameron has not yet replaced Patrick Mercer who was sacked as Homeland Security Spokesman last week. This is all the more surprising given that the Conservatives have consistently called for the Government to have a Homeland Security Minister of Cabinet rank. Mr Mercer, regarded as an expert on security matters, was appointed by Iain Duncan Smith and had remained in the post (until last week) under a succession of Tory leaders and through a series reshuffles of the Shadow frontbench.

It is understood that Mr Mercer's replacement may come at the next reshuffle - thought to be imminent. Rumours abound that Adam Holloway - currently on the Defence Select Committee - is tipped for the position. Mr Holloway is highly regarded and well liked by his colleagues. He is an expert on defence matters, having served in the military with distinction. He has also worked hard on the Commons Committee and is becoming an invaluable source of information on defence issues.
